A new monitoring well has been drilled at 8 Oaks Park near the City of Georgetown, SC. The well is 845 feet deep and screened in the McQueen Branch aquifer. It will be instrumented with an automated water-level recorder and will be added to the SCDNR Groundwater Monitoring Network, a network of wells used to assess groundwater availability in the State. SCDNR is pleased to announce the release of two annual water resource reports: Potentiometric Surface of the Upper and Middle Floridan Aquifers in South Carolina, November-December 2021 and Potentiometric Surface of the Gordon Aquifer in South Carolina, November-December 2021. Each report includes a map, table, and description of groundwater conditions observed during late 2021. The reports, along with all other Hydrology Section publications, can be found here. A new web application providing information on the hydrogeologic framework of the South Carolina Coastal Plain has been released. Fourteen cross sections showing the distribution of the major aquifers of the Coastal Plain can be viewed, along with geophysical data, water level data, and detailed lithologic descriptions of cores that were used to develop the framework.

Planning activities in the Broad basin will begin in the Fall of 2021 through several public meetings and the solicitation of River Basin Council members. Planning activities in the Pee Dee basin will begin in early 2022. SCDNR is pleased to announce the release of a new report entitled, An Assessment of Groundwater-Quality Conditions and Chloride Distribution in the Charleston and Gramling aquifers in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties, South Carolina, 2020. The report describes groundwater chemistry results from sampling 17 production wells and estimates the landward location of the freshwater-saltwater interface in Charleston aquifer. The report includes a map with a discussion of current and historical data, water-level trends, and recommendations for monitoring. The SCDNR Hydrology Section was recently awarded a grant from the USGS National Ground-Water Monitoring Network Program (https://cida.usgs.gov/ngwmn/). The grant will be used for well maintenance activities at SCDNR’s saltwater intrusion monitoring sites and to support the agency’s groundwater-level monitoring network. The report presents groundwater levels measured in all SCDNR monitoring wells during the eight-year period from 2011 through 2018, as well as a discussion of recent and long-term water-level trends seen in all of South Carolina’s major aquifers. SCDNR has appointed 23 members to the Edisto River Basin Council. The Council is represented by a diverse group of stakeholders and is responsible for developing the Edisto River Basin Plan under the guidance of the South Carolina State Water Planning Framework.

The SCDNR Groundwater Program is pleased to announce the release of a portal for viewing and downloading groundwater-level data. The Groundwater Program maintains a network of approximately 180 wells routinely monitored for drought assessment, long-term water-level trends, and water availability assessments. More information about the network can be found on the SCDNR Groundwater Program website.

SCDNR is pleased to announce the release of the final report on water demand methodologies. This report, entitled Projection Methods for Off-stream Water Demand in South Carolina, describes the methods that will be used to estimate future water demand in the State. These methodologies will first be applied in the Edisto basin in preparation for river basin planning activities in 2020. See the final report here.

Funded by the USGS National Ground-Water Monitoring Network Program, twelve new monitoring wells were drilled in locations across the South Carolina Coastal Plain Province where groundwater level data were lacking. See the final report here.
